Para quién es

Readers who enjoy comic rogues, biting satire and clever liars stumbling from one disaster to another will love this book. It also suits lovers of Spanish history and narrators who mock themselves.

De qué trata este libro

What would you do if your father were a thief, your mother sold beauty and worse, and you still wanted to be a gentleman? That is the problem of Pablos, who tells his story to a lady he calls madam. He begins in Segovia, where his father shaves beards and picks pockets, and he hides no shame.

The Life and Adventures of Don Pablos the Sharper was written by Francisco de Quevedo, a Spanish poet and satirist of the Golden Age. It is a picaresque tale of a low-born rogue who lives by his wits and serves many masters. You get the whole route, the best scenes and the ideas under the jokes. Pablos learns that a clever lie opens doors, and that it closes them again.

A thief's son decides to become a gentleman

Pablos names his family without shame, which is part of the joke. His father, Clemente Pablo, is a barber who prefers to be called a tailor of beards. His mother, Aldonza de San Pedro, is doubted by the town to be an Old Christian. Pablos is born into a house with nothing to boast about, so he decides to boast anyway.

Both parents are thieves of different kinds. Clemente shaves customers while his small son picks their pockets, and the law whips him through Segovia for it. Aldonza mends maidens, makes wigs and arranges meetings for a living. When they quarrel over his future, Pablos says he wants to go to school. His father says stealing is a liberal art.

At school Pablos befriends Don Diego Coronel, the son of a nobleman. The other boys call him Don Razor and mew like cats when he passes. At Carnival he is made King of the Cocks and ends up caked in mud. He leaves home to serve Don Diego. Shame is the first push that sends Pablos toward disguise.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
