In Chapter 11, Magua reveals that Munro’s public whipping drives his revenge, and he demands that Cora become his wife in exchange for her sister’s freedom. When Cora and her companions reject this bargain, the Hurons prepare torture, but Heyward breaks free and an unexplained rifle shot kills his attacker.
