De qué trata este libro
Picture eight days in an open boat, the water gone by the fourth, and then a waking in a cabin where a stranger holds your wrist. Overhead, iron bangs and a large animal snarls. That is how Edward Prendick comes back to life in The Island of Doctor Moreau.
H. G. Wells published the novel in 1896, after studying biology under a famous teacher. One question drives it all: what makes a person a person?

A shipwreck leaves Prendick in Montgomery's debt
Edward Prendick is a private gentleman who has turned to natural history. He sails on the Lady Vain, which collides with a wreck at sea. He escapes in a dinghy with two other men, one small beaker of water and a few soggy biscuits.
On the sixth day one of them says aloud what all three have been thinking. One must die so that the others can drink. Prendick resists, but in the end he agrees to toss halfpennies. The lot falls on the sailor, who refuses it and fights, and two men roll over the side and sink.
He wakes in a cabin on a small schooner. A fair-haired man with watery gray eyes sits holding his wrist. This is Montgomery, a former medical student who has fed and nursed him. Asked where the ship is going, Montgomery says he lives on an island with no name, and then puts on a stupid look so that Prendick will stop asking.
Before the island even appears, the book shows how thin the line is between a civilised person and a frightened animal.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about The Island of Doctor Moreau
What is The Island of Doctor Moreau about?
It tells of Edward Prendick, who survives a shipwreck and is landed on an island run by the scientist Doctor Moreau. There he finds strange, half-human creatures made by surgery, and must work out what they are and how to escape.
Who is Doctor Moreau in the book?
Moreau is a once-famous physiologist driven out of England after a scandal over cruel animal experiments. He now works in secret on a remote island, trying to shape animals into human beings through surgery and training.
What does the Law and the question Are we not Men mean?
The Law is a set of rules the creatures chant, such as not going on all fours or eating flesh. Each rule ends with Are we not Men, showing how they cling to being human through behaviour.
Is The Island of Doctor Moreau a true story, and when was it written?
No, it is a work of fiction by H. G. Wells, published in 1896. It draws on real debates of the time about vivisection, evolution and the limits of science, and presents itself as a survivor's written account.
What is the main message of The Island of Doctor Moreau?
Wells warns that science pursued without conscience can become cruel, and he asks how thin the line is between human and animal. The book suggests that civilisation depends on pity and restraint, not only on knowledge.
