In Chapter 2, Quasimodo brings la Esmeralda into Notre-Dame’s sanctuary, gives her clothing, food, and his own bed, and warns her against leaving the church. Although she fears his appearance and grieves over Phœbus, his gentleness moves her, while Djali’s affection brings tears that ease her sorrow.

What happens

  1. The narrator explains that sanctuary protects condemned people but also confines them, with occasional exceptions imposed by parliament.
  2. Quasimodo places la Esmeralda in a rooftop refuge, where she remembers her rescue and Phœbus’s rejection.
  3. He brings donated clothing, then gives her his own food and mattress.
  4. He warns her to remain inside the church, where she can walk freely only at night.
  5. Djali’s affection releases her tears, and an evening walk above the city brings some relief.
