Para quién es

Readers who enjoy swashbuckling adventure, duels, disguises and daring rescues will find plenty here. So will anyone who likes meeting real figures such as Machiavelli and Bayard inside a story of honour and forgiveness.

De qué trata este libro

What happens to a man when his friends turn their backs in a single evening? At a supper in the camp near Arezzo, a soldier named Ugo di Savelli hears a rival say he will not drink with a thief. Within hours a buried bag of stolen goods and a stern court-martial take away his sword, his spurs and his good name.

The Honour of Savelli is a historical adventure by S. Levett Yeats, who took Alexandre Dumas as his model. It gives you duels, disguises, poisoned wine, a savage bear and a cast that includes Machiavelli and the knight Bayard. Savelli tells it himself, years afterward. Will he take revenge, or win his honour back another way?

A false charge destroys a soldier in one night

Ugo di Savelli is a captain of good family and a thin purse, serving in King Louis's army. At a supper near Arezzo, his rival D'Entrangues refuses to drink with him and calls him a thief. For weeks a clever thief has robbed the camp, and the duchess has lost a ruby circlet.

D'Entrangues asks for a search of Savelli's tent. His servant Tarbes is threatened with the wheel and points to a valise buried under a rug. Inside lie stolen goods, and a small key found on Savelli himself opens the lock. At the trial, Bayard asks how D'Entrangues knew of the deposit at all. But Tarbes has already been hanged, so no one can put the question to him.

Savelli could clear himself by saying where he was on the seventh of March. Then he sees Madame D'Entrangues in the gallery, begging him with her eyes to stay silent. He says only that he cannot say. The court breaks his sword and gives him an hour to leave the camp.

A man may lose everything by keeping silent to protect another person.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about El honor de Savelli

What is The Honour of Savelli about?

It follows Ugo di Savelli, a soldier falsely accused of theft in a French camp in Italy. Disgraced, he travels to Florence, Rome and Perugia, meets Machiavelli and Bayard, and fights to win back his good name.

Who is Savelli's enemy in the book?

His enemy is D'Entrangues, a French officer who hides stolen goods in Savelli's tent and accuses him in front of the army. His wife, Madame D'Entrangues, is Savelli's friend and plays a quiet part in the story.

Is The Honour of Savelli a true story?

No, it is an invented adventure set in the early 1500s. It uses real people such as Machiavelli, Bayard, Cardinal d'Amboise and Pope Alexander VI, and real places, but the central plot of Savelli's disgrace is fiction.

Is The Honour of Savelli easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that matters. Savelli narrates in a clear, lively voice, the chapters are short and each ends with a fresh turn. Duels, chases and humorous side characters keep the pace brisk from start to finish.

What is the main message of the book?

The book shows that honour rests on what a person does and not on what others say. It also weighs revenge against forgiveness, and suggests that kindness and restraint can matter more than winning a fight.
