A shy girl travels alone to Cherton

The story begins in a railway carriage. A boy of eleven named Dick Gregory leaps in with a cricket bat, a fishing rod and a hamper. He starts talking to the only other passenger, a small girl of nine called Inna Weston. She is going from London to Cherton, to the home of her great-uncle, Dr. Jonathan Willett, whom she has never met.

Inna answers with quiet politeness. When he starts to describe her uncle and his housekeeper, she gently hints that talking about people behind their backs is not nice. Dick praises her mother's lesson about making an ugly name beautiful through good deeds, and Inna's eyes grow wistful.

At Cherton nobody waits for her, because nobody knows she is coming. Her father is so ill that doctors say he may die if he spends the winter in England, so her parents have gone abroad. She walks the lanes in the sunset, a blue dot among golden fields, and knocks at the door of Willett's Farm. The housekeeper, Mrs. Grant, calls her a poor unwelcome lamb. Inna asks for a seat and says she has a letter that will explain everything.

Gentle courage can stand in an unwelcoming doorway and still be kind.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
