Resumen de Las alturas protegidas
Para quién es
Readers who like a determined young man with something to prove, college life and football, the glitter of old New York society, and a love story fought over many years.
De qué trata este libro
The Guarded Heights is a novel by Wadsworth Camp about a livery stable keeper's son named George Morton, who sets out to rise in American society and to win the one woman who despises him. It opens in the years before the First World War on the Oakmont estate of a railroad millionaire and follows George through Princeton, Wall Street, the war in France and the unsettled peace.
The book gives you a hard-driving hero with a clear goal and a stubborn will. It shows you the clubs, class elections and football fields of a great university, the trading rooms and parties of New York, and the trenches of the Argonne. At every turn the question is the same. What does a man owe to those who helped him climb, and what does he lose when he climbs only for himself?
George makes a vow in his first chapter, and the story is the long fight to keep it. We begin with a fall from a horse, a broken riding crop and a boast.

A fall from a horse starts a vow
George Morton is twenty when his father's livery stable fails. Cheap automobiles have killed the trade, and the creditors take the horses. Old Planter, the millionaire who owns the great estate of Oakmont, buys the little house where the Mortons live and draws his boundary around it. George is known as the best horseman in the countryside, so Planter's superintendent offers him work in the estate stables.
George dislikes the idea of being anyone's servant, but his frightened parents beg him to accept. Soon he is assigned to guard Sylvia Planter on her rides. She has just come home from school, and she is slender, black haired and fearless. She speaks to him only about the horses and the weather, and she calls him Morton as if he were a groom.
Day after day he rides behind her and watches her, and without admitting it he falls in love. One July afternoon she tries a thorny hedge on a bad takeoff, and her horse refuses. She sails over the hedge and lies motionless in the meadow beyond.
George runs to her in terror. He lifts her, calls her name and begs her to open her eyes, saying he cannot live without her. She wakes, and she has heard every word.
The story is built on what happens next. She calls him an impertinent servant and swings her riding crop at his face. He catches her wrist and snaps the crop in two. He puts the pieces in his pocket as a reminder of the insult and swears that he will have her.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
