A dying father demands vengeance
The story opens as Warren Jarvis rides home to Meadow Green, Kentucky, with his manservant Rusty Snow. A telegram from his father has called him from New York. He arrives to find old Colonel Henderson Jarvis dying on a settee, shot in the back on a village street. Warren's mother has died the night before, unable to bear the shock.
The colonel tells what happened. He was riding home from the doctor with medicine for his wife when Jim Marcum stepped out of a poolroom and taunted him. Moments later a shot struck him from behind, just as his own father had once been shot by a Marcum. The feud between the two families is nearly eighty years old, and now only Jim Marcum and Warren are left to carry it.
The colonel's last order is to bury his wife and himself together and then end the feud. Warren kneels beside the body and swears an oath, like a knight taking his vows. The scene shows the world he comes from, a place of colonels, thoroughbreds, garden flowers and a code of honor that has cost three generations their lives. It also shows how far he has traveled from it, after years of work in Brazil, Guatemala and Panama and a business life in New York.
The chase soon turns around. Warren plans a quiet manhunt through the mountains, but Rusty has been following Marcum's trail on his own. His telegram says he is coming with Marcum, and he catches Warren outside a New York club to say that the man has come to the city with a gun. Rusty hands over a pistol he bought by going without pork chops, since New York law forbids carrying one. A friendly note from Marcum asking to shake hands does not fool Warren, who burns it and tells a friend at the club that he may take a long journey tonight.
