A poor lord arrives in London
Nigel, Lord Glenvarloch, arrives from Scotland young, proud and short of money. His father spent his fortune serving the crown, and the king never repaid it. Nigel comes to petition for the debt, because the family estate depends on the answer.
He brings one companion, his servant Richie Moniplies, an Edinburgh butcher's son who is shrewd, talkative and loyal. Richie is the comic voice of the book and sees the city more clearly than his master does. The two lodge with John Christie, a ship chandler near the Temple, and Scott makes the city come alive as a place with its own rules.
Nigel soon learns that a just claim is not enough. Papers must be filed, officials flattered, and the king is hard to reach. The lender who holds a mortgage on his lands will soon be entitled to take them. The question is whether honesty can survive here.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
