Para quién es

Readers who love Victorian melodrama, sharp portraits of hypocrites, comic old soldiers and a love story under threat will feel at home here. Fans of Conan Doyle will enjoy his early storytelling.

De qué trata este libro

Picture a merchant whose son fines clerks for a game of odd man out, while he gives to charity and sits in the front pew three times every Sunday. Now picture that same man swearing at a deathbed to guard his friend's daughter while he already counts her fortune. That is John Girdlestone.

Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Firm of Girdlestone early in his career, before Sherlock Holmes made his name. This Victorian novel of money, pride and fraud moves from London counting houses to Edinburgh and a lonely priory on the Hampshire coast.

A respectable firm hides a cold heart

Girdlestone and Co., African Merchants, sits behind a narrow passage near Fenchurch Street Station in London. Inside, about ten young clerks bend over mahogany desks under Ezra's watchful eye. The firm is run by John Girdlestone and his only child, Ezra. The City calls the father Iron Girdlestone and praises him as a man of strict religion and strict honesty.

The first scene shows what that means. Ezra catches three clerks playing odd man out and docks five shillings from each. Then he fines the old senior clerk, Gilray, ten shillings.

Next word comes that three sailors of the ship Black Eagle have died of fever. Ezra grumbles that their wives will besiege the office for pensions. The father scolds him only for his tone, then says a pension would encourage vice and weaken thrift. A respectable name can cover a cold and calculating heart.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La firma de Girdlestone

What is The Firm of Girdlestone about?

It tells of a London trading firm headed by the pious John Girdlestone and his son Ezra, who hide financial ruin, cheat their workers, and turn on Kate Harston, the ward whose fortune could save them.

Who is Major Tobias Clutterbuck?

He is a pompous, bald, card-playing army veteran who lives in cheap lodgings with his German friend Von Baumser. He tells tall tales, carries a derringer, and becomes a surprising player in the Girdlestone story.

Is The Firm of Girdlestone a true story?

No, it is a novel. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it early in his career, drawing on real Victorian features such as unsafe ships, risky speculation, and his own student years in Edinburgh.

Is The Firm of Girdlestone easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that matters. The chapters are short and lively, the humor is broad, and the plot moves from office scenes to rugby matches to a lonely priory in clear, direct prose.

What is the main message of The Firm of Girdlestone?

The book shows that respectability can be a cover for greed and cruelty, while honest feeling and loyalty can be found among people with little money. It judges characters by their acts, not by their words.
