Para quién es

For readers who love historical fiction about honor, divided families and secret identities, with a real rebellion and real judges in the background, and a narrator who gossips and moralizes as the story goes.

De qué trata este libro

The Fate is a historical novel by G. P. R. James, set in England in the troubled summer of 1685. It follows Ralph Woodhall, a young Cambridge graduate from a poor branch of a noble family, who leaves his father's old house in Lincolnshire to seek his fortune. He does it for one reason only: to earn the right to marry his cousin Margaret.

The book mixes private life with public events. A mysterious astrologer, a servant with a hidden grievance, a scheming cousin and two remarkable women shape Ralph's road. Behind them rise Monmouth's rebellion, the battle on Sedgemoor and the bloody courts of Judge Jeffreys. James writes in a talkative, moral voice and often steps out of the story to speak to you directly.

Here you get the story told in order, up to the point where its secrets begin to break open. We start at The Grange, with a father who reads Latin by the fire and a son who wants more than books.

A Poor Gentleman Seeks His Fortune

The story opens at The Grange, an old monastery barn turned house on the edge of the Lincolnshire fens. Its owner, Mr. Woodhall, is a learned and whimsical man who gave up a promising law career when his beautiful wife died. He now lives among his books, his armor and his Latin sayings, with his only son, Ralph.

Ralph is twenty-one and has just left Cambridge. He tells his father he wants to try his luck in the wider world. His father warns him that a court life costs money and that nothing is ever quite the same after a change. Still, over punch with the parish priest and an Irish chaplain named M'Feely, he agrees to let the young man go.

What Ralph does not say is why he is so eager. Across the stream stands the hall of his cousin Lord Woodhall, whose daughter Margaret has been his friend since childhood. Ralph is a younger son's descendant, poor and without rank, while Margaret is the child of a wealthy house.

On a moonlit walk by the stream he tells her that he loves her and must go away to win a place that could make a marriage possible. He asks for nothing but hope. She answers that she will always love him and promises not to give herself to another without warning him first. The chaplain breaks in on them, full of jokes and suspicion, and the lovers part in the dark.

That’s 1 of 12 key points.

Questions about El destino

What is The Fate by G. P. R. James about?

It follows Ralph Woodhall, a poor young gentleman who leaves home in 1685 to win his cousin Margaret. A scheming relative, a fatal duel, Monmouth's rebellion and Judge Jeffreys's courts all threaten him, while an astrologer promises that things will come right.

Who is Moraber in The Fate?

Moraber is a white-haired astrologer who lives alone on the Lincolnshire moor. He predicts the fortunes of Ralph and Margaret, sends Ralph a servant, and watches over them by letter. His name and his purpose are explained near the end of the book.

When is The Fate set, and is it a true story?

The story takes place in 1685 and is fiction. Real people such as the Duke of Monmouth, Lord Churchill, Colonel Kirke and Judge Jeffreys appear, and the Sedgemoor battle and the Bloody Assizes are true events, but Ralph and his family are invented.

What is the main message of The Fate?

The book suggests that honor, steady love and plain honesty outlast cunning, and that people shape their fate by their choices. It also argues that war and cruel courts harm the innocent far more than their defenders admit.

Is The Fate easy to follow?

The story moves through clear scenes, with letters, chases, a ball and a duel, and the narrator speaks warmly to the reader. Each short chapter has its own turn, so it is easy to keep your place.
