Para quién es

This book suits readers who love art that tells a story, enjoy famous Bible scenes in their own words, or want a clear guide to who is who in Scripture.

De qué trata este libro

What does Eve see when she first opens her eyes? She stands shy and graceful in the dim light of dawn, among the leaves of Eden. She gazes at the sleeping man she was made for, and behind her a faint, mysterious figure looks on.

The Doré Bible Gallery, Complete is built around the engravings of Gustave Doré, a French artist of the nineteenth century. You get a guided walk through the best-known scenes of Scripture, from a garden and a flood to a manger, a tomb and a pale horse.

The gallery opens with Eden and its losses

The book is built like a walk through a picture hall. Each station gives a title and either a biblical passage with references or editorial commentary. The order moves broadly from Genesis toward the New Testament.

It begins with Eve. God puts Adam into a deep sleep, takes one of his ribs and forms a woman.

Then comes the loss of Paradise. God sets cherubim and a flaming sword at the east of the garden. The two look back at the blazing gate, shed a few tears, and walk on hand in hand into a wide world. Exile here is sad but not hopeless.

Next the sorrow spreads to the family. Cain kills his brother Abel in a field and answers God with a cold question about being his brother's keeper. Yet God puts a mark on Cain so that no one will kill him. Rain then falls for forty days, and only Noah and those with him live. At Babel, one people raise a tower to make a name for themselves, and God scatters them over the earth.

The early scenes show how quickly pride and anger spoil a good beginning.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
