De qué trata este libro

The Czar's Spy is an adventure novel of mystery and espionage by William Le Queux, an author who wrote many thrillers in the years before the First World War. It is told by Gordon Gregg, an Englishman who lives in the Tuscan port of Leghorn and, for a few hot weeks, stands in for the vice-consul there. What begins as a small port-side puzzle grows into a chase across Italy, Scotland, Finland and Russia.

The book gives you a yacht that should not exist, a stolen set of keys, a trap in a London back street, a murder in a Scottish wood, and a photograph of a girl who seems to hold the key to it all. Gregg follows every clue with growing stubbornness, and the book moves fast from one strange scene to the next.

It also gives you a look at the Russian Empire as the Edwardian public pictured it, with its secret police, its prisons and its hidden revolutionaries. Let us begin with the visit of a friendly yachtsman to the British consulate.

A wrecked yacht and a charming host

The story opens in Leghorn in mid-July. Gordon Gregg, an English writer living nearby, is filling in as pro-consul while the vice-consul, Frank Hutcheson, is on leave. The old interpreter Francesco Carducci tells him that an English steam yacht has run aground on the Meloria shoal. The harbor captain suspects her crew tried to lose the ship on purpose.

The owner calls at the consulate. He gives his name as Philip Hornby, of Woodcroft Park in Somerset, and he is a cheerful, well-spoken man of about forty-five. He asks Gregg to write polite letters of thanks in Italian to the admiral and the harbor captain. Gregg likes him at once and goes with him for vermouth in the main square.

That afternoon the yacht's captain, a stocky Scot named Mackintosh with a scar across his cheek, gives a very weak report. He never sent up a distress signal, which seems odd for a man who thought his ship might be lost. Gregg's curiosity is aroused, and when Hornby invites him to dine aboard, he accepts gladly.

The yacht, called the Lola, is a small liner in white paint and brass. Hornby's friend Hylton Chater lounges on deck, looking like a barrister. The two men are charming, but they glance at one another uneasily whenever Gregg asks about the crew.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
