Idea clave 1 de 7

A chance remark on a ship starts everything

The story begins aboard the liner Majestic, bound for Queenstown. Arthur Marcel, a thirty-one-year-old Englishman who studied medicine and then spent an inheritance on travel, falls into talk with a fellow passenger, Herbert Brande. Brande dismisses the stars and the whole universe with one sentence, and he is serious.

Brande then mentions a group he has founded, the Cui Bono Society, a Latin name that asks what good anything is. Marcel is more taken by Brande's sister, Natalie, a dark, gentle woman with an odd habit of speaking about life and death in strange ways. Before she leaves the ship, she answers a private thought of his that he never spoke aloud.

So the first idea of the book is plain. Marcel does not join for science. He joins for love, and that choice, made lightly, shapes every danger that follows.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.
