A new Assembly squeezes a captive king

The story opens on the first of October 1791, when a new Legislative Assembly meets in Paris. King Louis XVI lives under guard in the Tuileries after his failed flight to Varennes. The new members, mostly lawyers, writers and landowners, are ready to fight both the clergy and the nobility.

Among them sits François Billet, a sturdy farmer who helped take the Bastille. He carries two grudges. A noble ruined his daughter Catherine, and a priest refused to bury his wife. When members argue about the royal title, Billet shouts that King of the French is enough for Capet. The king ends up with a plain armchair instead of a throne.

Meanwhile, nobles who have fled abroad stir up the rulers of Europe, and war comes closer. The king vetoes the decree against priests who refuse the oath, and a Jacobin orator draws a sword and promises victory. Dumas shows a nation sliding toward conflict from every side, and each choice of the court pushes it nearer to the break.

Questions about La condesa de Charny

What is The Countess of Charny about?

It follows the French Revolution from late 1791 to the early months of 1794. The novel centers on Billet, Pitou, Doctor Gilbert, Count Charny and Andrea, set against the queen and the storming of the Tuileries.

Do I need to read the earlier books in Dumas's Marie Antoinette series first?

No. The story gives you the background in the first chapter, naming each person and their old wrongs. The book reads well as a stand-alone tale of the fall of the monarchy.

Who are the Invisibles in the book?

They are a secret society led by Cagliostro, whose real name is Joseph Balsamo. They work to overthrow the monarchy and set up a republic, and their influence runs behind many events.

Is The Countess of Charny a true story?

Dumas mixes real history with invented people. Danton, Santerre, Dumouriez, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are historical, and the August 1792 events are real. Billet, Pitou, Andrea and Charny are the author's creations.

Is this book easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that the chapters are short and the scenes are vivid. Dumas guides you with clear introductions to each person and event, and the lively dialogue, comic interludes and adventure keep the pace brisk.
