Para quién es

You will love this book if you enjoy ancient visions, angels and heavenly maps, or wonder what lay behind the Bible's short mentions of Enoch.

De qué trata este libro

What could one short line in Genesis about a man who walked with God and then was no more have to do with a whole library of heavenly journeys? Quite a lot, say the writings gathered here. They picture Enoch taken up to see the engines of the sky, the prisons of fallen angels and the final judgment.

The collection holds 1 Enoch, preserved whole in Ethiopic, 2 Enoch in Old Church Slavonic and 3 Enoch, a Hebrew text of the palace mystics. Companion works carry Isaiah, Abraham and Solomon into the same world. Many hands shaped these books, and the Epistle of Jude quotes Enoch. Let us begin on a mountain, with an oath sworn by two hundred angels.

Two hundred angels swear an oath on Hermon

The Book of the Watchers opens with Enoch’s blessing and a vision. Angels who watch from heaven see the beautiful daughters of men and decide to take wives. Their leader, Semjaza, fears that he alone will pay for so great a sin.

The others propose that they all bind themselves with an oath. All two hundred swear together and come down onto the top of Mount Hermon. The unions bring giants who eat all that people have grown, then people, then each other. The earth itself cries out against them.

Knowledge spreads alongside the violence. The Watchers teach spells and the uses of roots. Azazel teaches swords, armor and jewelry. The writer treats these skills as stolen secrets that push people toward corruption. This gives an early Jewish answer to why evil spreads.

The takeaway: in this story, evil grows when power and forbidden knowledge are taken without permission.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
