Para quién es

This book suits you if you love music and opera, enjoy witty arguments about art, or wonder how a bold thinker broke with a hero.

De qué trata este libro

What happens when a philosopher who once worshipped a composer decides that the music is making Europe sick? In the spring of 1888, in Turin, Friedrich Nietzsche sits down to write about Richard Wagner. He begins with Bizet's opera Carmen, which he has heard twenty times and which makes him a better philosopher every time.

As a young scholar he gave Wagner his whole heart. This volume gathers The Case of Wagner, a sharp, joking pamphlet, then Nietzsche Contra Wagner, and aphorisms from 1878. You get a friendship told backward, a theory of art as health or sickness, and Wagner as a gifted actor.

Wagner was the illness Nietzsche had to survive

The Case of Wagner begins with a confession. Nietzsche says that turning away from Wagner was a matter of fate. Few people, he claims, had been more tangled up in Wagnerism, and few had felt such joy at escaping.

He does not hide his own part. He calls himself a child of his age, a decadent, just as Wagner is. The only difference is that he recognized the condition and fought it. That fight is what he means by being a philosopher.

His main worry is decadence, the decline of life and vitality in a culture. Train your eye to spot the signs and you can read morality too, since beneath its holiest names he finds exhaustion and a will to nothingness.

Then comes a surprise. The philosopher cannot do without Wagner. He is the finest guide through the labyrinth of the modern spirit. Understand what is good and bad in Wagner and you have almost calculated the value of the modern world. He thanks Wagner the way a patient thanks a disease that taught him about health.

To understand your age, study the thing that tempts you most and then learn to leave it.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about El caso Wagner, Nietzsche contra Wagner y aforismos selectos

What is The Case of Wagner about?

It is a witty pamphlet from 1888 in which Nietzsche argues that Wagner is an actor and a decadent whose music stimulates tired nerves. He sets Bizet's Carmen against Wagner as a model of clear, healthy art.

Why does Nietzsche praise Bizet's Carmen?

He finds in Carmen lightness, precision and southern clarity. It treats the listener as intelligent, presents love as fate and nature, and makes him feel more alive, which is his test of good art.

What does decadence mean for Nietzsche?

It means a decline of vitality and organizing power, in a person, a style or a culture. Details become loud while the whole weakens, and people seek strong stimulants and comforting ideals instead of health.
