De qué trata este libro
The Buccaneer is a historical romance by Mrs. S. C. Hall, published in the nineteenth century and set in 1656 on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. It mixes invented people with real figures of the age, among them Cromwell himself, his daughter Lady Frances, the poet Milton and the rabbi Manasseh Ben Israel.
The story opens on a February night when a sea captain named Hugh Dalton climbs a cliff to demand a favour from a powerful landowner. Dalton is an outlaw who sails a fast brigantine called the Fire-fly. He wants a pardon from the Protector, and he holds papers that can ruin the man he is asking. What follows is a tale of secret crimes, forced engagements, disguises, smugglers' caves, and loyalties tested at sea and on shore.
You will meet a grieving heiress, a deformed but sharp-witted servant, a fearless young sailor, and a smooth villain who hides behind piety. First, let us see how the night on the cliff begins.

A buccaneer climbs the cliff by night
The book opens in February 1656, on the Isle of Sheppey. A small skiff lands in a hidden bay, with three men aboard. The leader is Hugh Dalton, master of the brigantine Fire-fly. With him are a boy named Springall and an Italian sailor named Jeromio. Dalton climbs a dangerous cliff path he has known for years and tells the boy to keep watch above.
Springall is soon grabbed by a cloaked stranger, who holds him over the drop and demands the name of his captain. The boy refuses to answer. Then he blows his whistle in alarm, and the stranger learns the name anyway, which shows how much he already knows.
Meanwhile Dalton walks on to Cecil Place, a house half red brick and half old abbey stone. The porter tells him that Lady Cecil is dying. Dalton insists on seeing her husband all the same and sends in a signet ring as a token.
The chapters that follow set up the rule of this tale. Each person wears a disguise of some kind, and secrets cling to the house like damp. Dalton's night visit is the first knock on a door that will not close again.
On the way through the house, he meets a young servant girl named Barbara Iverk. He asks if she is happy and offers her a purse, which she refuses. His rough face softens, and the reader senses that this girl matters to him far more than a stranger's gift would suggest.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
