In Chapter 9, Dmitri Karamazov is formally detained and taken away under guard, accepting suffering for his violent intentions while denying that he kills his father. Grushenka promises to follow him, officials and bystanders respond with varying degrees of coldness, and Kalganov offers a farewell handshake before breaking down in despair.

What happens

  1. Nikolay Parfenovitch reads the detention order, and Mitya accepts that the officials must imprison him.
  2. Mitya welcomes suffering as a possible cleansing but denies killing his father and insists on defending himself.
  3. Nikolay Parfenovitch avoids Mitya’s offered hand, then describes him as honorable but ruled by excessive passions.
  4. Grushenka promises lasting loyalty, declares Mitya innocent, and receives his apology for the harm his love brings her.
  5. Outside, transport delays and Mavriky Mavrikyevitch’s harshness deepen Mitya’s humiliation, while Trifon Borissovitch ignores his farewells.
  6. Kalganov shakes Mitya’s hand before the cart leaves, then weeps despite his near certainty that Mitya is guilty.
