Chapter 14 de 96 · Part 4 · 11 min para leer el chapter
In Chapter 14, Ippolit Kirillovitch challenges the defense, Mitya again denies killing his father, and the jury withdraws while much of the audience expects an acquittal. The jurors instead find him guilty without qualification, overturning those expectations and provoking his desperate protest, Grushenka’s shriek, and disorder before sentencing is postponed.
Qué sucede
- Ippolit Kirillovitch attacks the defense’s speculative account and its treatment of family duty and Christianity; Fetyukovitch replies with irony.
- Exhausted and subdued, Mitya denies the murder, thanks both lawyers, and begs the jury to spare him.
- During the jury’s absence, Fetyukovitch expresses confidence, while spectators debate the case and largely expect acquittal.
- After exactly an hour, the jury returns guilty answers without any qualifying recommendation.
- Mitya protests his innocence and forgives Katya; Grushenka screams, he is removed, and sentencing is deferred until the next day.
