Para quién es

For readers who love clever locked-room puzzles, dry humour and Victorian London, and for Sherlock Holmes fans who enjoy rival detectives testing their judgment against an impossible crime.

De qué trata este libro

The Big Bow Mystery is a short detective novel by Israel Zangwill, a London writer of Jewish immigrant parents. It first appeared in 1891 in a London evening newspaper, The Star, and came out as a book in 1892. It is often named as the first full-length novel built around a murder in a locked room. The crime happens in the working-class district of Bow, in the East End of London.

The set-up is simple and hard to escape. A landlady cannot wake her lodger, a kind and respected man. When the door is forced, he is dead, and the room was fastened from the inside. No one could have got in and no one could have got out. In this book you will meet a landlady, two rival detectives, a public hungry for news, and a puzzle that gets stranger as it is examined. You also get a story that smiles at its own genre while it plays fair with the puzzle. Let us begin with the morning of the discovery.

A landlady cannot wake her lodger

The story opens in Bow, a crowded district of East London. Mrs. Drabdump keeps a lodging house, and she is a woman who notices everything and says a good deal about it. One of her lodgers is Arthur Constant, a gentle man known for his kindness and his public spirit. He has asked her to wake him early on a certain morning, and she goes to do it.

She knocks, and there is no answer. She knocks again, harder, and still the room is silent. A woman of her habits does not give up. She grows uneasy, and the unease turns to alarm as the minutes pass.

She goes for help and meets a neighbour, Mr. Grodman. He is a retired detective with a name for sharp work, and he happens to be close at hand. Together they go back to the door, and between them they decide it must be forced. The scene is quiet but tense, and the author lets the ordinary details of a London morning press against the dread.

When the door gives way, they find Arthur Constant dead. The sight is plain and shocking, and it is the start of everything that follows. From this one room the whole book grows. The reader is placed exactly where the two witnesses stand, looking at the same scene and asking the same question about how it happened.
