Para quién es
For readers who love quiet, close studies of a mind, and for anyone who has put off living until the right moment. A story for those drawn to hidden fears, unspoken love, and the meaning of waiting.
De qué trata este libro
The Beast in the Jungle is a novella by Henry James, first published in 1903. It belongs to his late period, when his sentences grew long and his stories turned inward. Very little happens on the surface. A man and a woman meet, talk, grow old, and wait. Yet the waiting is the whole drama, and James makes it as tense as any chase.
John Marcher believes that his life is set aside for something rare and terrible, which he pictures as a beast crouching in a jungle, ready to spring. He tells his secret to one person, May Bartram, and she agrees to watch with him. This summary walks you through the story up to its last turn, shows what it is really about, and explains how James tells it. You will also meet the questions that make people argue over it still. Let us begin with the day Marcher and May meet again at a country house.

An old secret is remembered at Weatherend
The story opens at Weatherend, a grand English country house, where a party of visitors is touring the rooms and pictures. John Marcher, a man in his thirties or so, is there as a guest. He notices a woman who seems to be waiting for him to notice her. She is May Bartram, a distant relation of the owners, who lives there in a modest position.
Marcher does not at first recall her. Then she reminds him that they met ten years before in Italy. She recalls a day among the ruins of Pompeii and a trip to the island of Capri. He is embarrassed that he has forgotten, and a little pleased that she has not.
Then she says the thing that matters. She remembers what he told her long ago. He had confided that he felt sure something extraordinary was waiting for him, something that would come and change everything. He had said it as a private conviction, not as a boast.
Marcher is startled that she kept it all that time. He is also relieved, because he has never told anyone else. In that moment, the reader sees what the whole tale will turn on. A man has a fixed idea about his fate, and a woman now holds it with him.
