De qué trata este libro
A boy stands up with the white pupils in his Connecticut classroom, and the teacher tells him to sit down. In that one moment he learns something about himself that nobody had said aloud.
James Weldon Johnson published The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man in 1912, without his name on it, and many readers took it for a true confession. It is a made-up life told by a man who never gives his name. He writes down a secret he has kept for years. You travel with him from Georgia to New York, Paris, Berlin and back to the South, and you see Black and white America around 1900 through a man who belongs to both and neither.

A boy in Georgia and Connecticut
The narrator opens by comparing himself to a criminal who cannot help confessing. He promises to tell what weighs on him in the last paragraph.
He is born in a small Georgia town a few years after the Civil War. He remembers a tall man with shiny boots and a gold watch who visits his mother in the evenings. On the last visit, the man drills a hole through a ten-dollar gold piece and ties it around the boy's neck. Then the boy and his mother take a train and settle in Connecticut, where she sews for the town ladies.
The happiest hours of his childhood come when she plays hymns on the little square piano. By seven he plays all his mother's hymns and songs by ear. His mother keeps him close, so he grows up proud, shy and set apart. He does not yet know why the world sorts children as it does.
A happy childhood can rest on a secret the child is not yet old enough to read.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
