Para quién es

For readers who love sea voyages, social panoramas and stories of migration between Spain and South America, with love, ambition and the search for a new life.

De qué trata este libro

The Argonauts is a novel by the Spanish writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, first published in Spanish in 1914 as Los argonautas. It belongs to the years when he turned his eyes from Valencia to the Americas. Its subject is the crossing of the Atlantic and the people who make it, in search of money, a new start or a fresh country.

The title points back to the Greek heroes who sailed with Jason to win the Golden Fleece. Blasco Ibáñez asks what the modern fleece is, and who the modern sailors are. In this summary you will hear about the setting, the kind of people the book gathers, the ideas that run under the action, and the way the author tells it. First, the ocean itself.

A ship becomes a small world

Blasco Ibáñez wrote in a time when great ocean liners carried hundreds of thousands of Europeans across the Atlantic. A ship of this kind was a floating town. It held rich passengers in comfort and poor ones in crowded lower decks, all moving toward the same distant shore.

The novel uses that setting as its frame. A voyage gives a writer a natural stage, because strangers are thrown together for weeks and cannot easily leave. Habits of class, nation and money show themselves quickly in such a place.

The title helps here. The Argonauts of old sailed together toward a prize that mattered more to some than to others. The modern ship carries its own crew of dreamers, and the author watches how a shared voyage joins them and also divides them.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.
