Para quién es

For readers who love warm, talkative stories with humour, a touch of mystery and a rich cast of ordinary Scots. Romance, family secrets and arguments over the past bring together collectors, fishermen, beggars and scholars.

De qué trata este libro

The Antiquary is a novel by Walter Scott, published in 1816. It is set in Scotland in the 1790s, on the east coast near the small port of Fairport, in a time when many people feared a French invasion. Scott published it without his name, as one of the Waverley novels. He wanted to paint the ordinary life of his own country, and he set the action among laird, beggar, fisherman and scholar rather than kings and rebels.

The book centres on Jonathan Oldbuck of Monkbarns, a bachelor who collects coins, books and old stones, and who loves to argue. Around him move a mysterious young man named Lovel, a vain baronet named Sir Arthur Wardour, a hot-tempered young soldier, a swindler from Germany, and Edie Ochiltree, an old wandering beggar who knows every road and every story. Behind the comedy runs a darker thread about a great family and a secret that has poisoned it for years.

You get comic scenes, a love story held back by pride and money, a storm, a rescue and an unfolding of old wrongs. Scott also gives you a sharp look at how people prize the past, sometimes wisely and sometimes foolishly. The first key point begins on a coach, where two travellers meet.

Two strangers meet on the coach

The story opens on a public coach travelling north toward Fairport. A young man who calls himself William Lovel shares the coach with an older traveller, a sharp-tongued, learned man in plain clothes. The older man is Jonathan Oldbuck, laird of Monkbarns, and he is returning home from a trip to Edinburgh.

Oldbuck wins the young man's attention by talking about old coins, old castles and old books. He does not waste a minute. He lectures, teases and questions all at once, and he expects to be answered in kind. Lovel is polite, quiet and somewhat guarded, and he says little about who he is or where his family comes from.

When they reach Fairport, Oldbuck takes a liking to the young man. He invites Lovel to visit Monkbarns and dine, and Lovel accepts. Scott makes the invitation feel natural. Oldbuck needs an audience, and Lovel needs a reason to stay near the town.

The reader soon sees why Lovel lingers. He has hopes in the neighbourhood, but he keeps them to himself. His silence about his birth and name hangs over the early chapters like a small cloud. Oldbuck suspects that Lovel has a story, but he is too busy showing off his collection to press the matter.

This opening matters because it sets the rhythm of the whole book. Scott lets two people talk, and in the talk we learn their habits, their pride and their kindness. The mystery of Lovel's past will not be solved here. It is planted early, and Scott lets it grow quietly while the comedy fills the foreground.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about El anticuario

What is The Antiquary by Walter Scott about?

It is a comic and serious novel set in 1790s Scotland. It follows a learned collector named Oldbuck, a mysterious young man in love with a baronet's daughter, a swindler, and the secrets of a grieving noble house.

Who is Edie Ochiltree in The Antiquary?

Edie is an old wandering beggar who wears the blue gown of a licensed pauper. He knows the countryside and its stories, speaks plainly, and proves braver and wiser than many of the gentlefolk around him.

Is The Antiquary based on a true story?

The plot is invented, but the setting is real. It was published in 1816 and is set in the 1790s, when Britain feared a French invasion. Scott drew Oldbuck partly from antiquarian friends he knew.

Is The Antiquary hard to read?

The humour and the story carry you along.

What is the Praetorium in The Antiquary?

It is the name Oldbuck gives to a mound near Monkbarns, which he thinks was a Roman general's tent site. Edie mocks the claim, and the dispute shows how a scholar can cling to a favourite theory.
