A beautiful witness sends an innocent man away

The book opens as the Berkeley Street murder trial ends. James Meredith, a wealthy young man, is found guilty of shooting Ferdinand Bulford in the street outside the house of his fiancee, Jean Briggerland. The judge believes her pale, sorrowful face in the witness box and brushes aside Meredith's claim that he had called only to end the engagement.

Meredith's friend and lawyer, Jack Glover, is certain the whole affair is a plot. Jean is Meredith's cousin, and she and her father would gain most of six hundred thousand pounds if Meredith were dead or locked away. Glover tells his senior partner, Mr. Rennett, that the girl has not won yet. Together they begin to talk of getting Meredith into a nursing home for a faked operation.

This first scene sets the pattern for everything that follows. A lovely face can win over a whole courtroom, and only a few people look behind it. Glover's task is to prove what nobody wants to believe.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
