A general receives a green letter
On a wet winter evening in Berlin, General von Hecht-Babenberg leaves the war office in his fur coat. The porter hands him a thin letter in an ugly green envelope. Through the glass door he glimpses a small, blue-pale face with grieving eyes, which vanishes at once.
The general thinks of the people in the street as raw material for his orders. Six months earlier he lost his field command and was put behind a desk. The cause was a hill called Quatre Vents, which he held too long and lost.
The letter comes from a Mr. Herbst, whose son Robert fell on that hill. It asks where the grave lies and hints at something about the general's daughter. The general tears it up, but the memory of the hill will not stay torn.
