Who Jane Porter is

Jane Porter comes from Baltimore and reaches the African coast with a party of fellow castaways. They settle in the old cabin near the shore, where Tarzan finds books and traces of his own origins.

Jane is brave, quick and kind, while her absent-minded father is often lost in his thoughts. She is also the first white woman Tarzan sees, and he watches the newcomers from the trees.

Jane Porter and the others in the story

Jane travels with her father, his assistant Samuel Philander, the servant Esmeralda and the young Englishman William Cecil Clayton. Their arrival brings people into the cabin that links Tarzan's forest life with his unknown human past.

Tarzan helps the party without showing himself, leaving game and driving away dangers. His particular interest in Jane becomes a growing love that draws him toward life among other people.
