A scorned lad takes on a sea monster
The first tale, from Scotland, follows the youngest of seven brothers. He is called Ashipattle because he sits among the ashes to warm his toes.
Then the Meester Stoorworm rises from the sea, so huge that its breath withers whatever it touches. The King owns the sword Snickersnapper, but it is too short to reach the creature's heart. A sorcerer says the beast will leave only if Princess Gemlovely is given to it.
Ashipattle says nothing and thinks. He coaxes his mother into learning the secret of his father's horse Feetgong, then borrows horse, hot peat and a kitchen knife in the night. By dawn he has fooled the King's boatman and set out alone. The tale says the one nobody notices may be the one who acts.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
