You will love this book if you enjoy American history told by someone who was there, lively personal stories, famous names met face to face, or the faith that drove a great speaker.
De qué trata este libro
What would you put in your life story if your words had reached more readers than almost anyone else's? T. De Witt Talmage faced that question late in the nineteenth century. His weekly sermons ran in newspapers around the world, and he put his audience at about twenty-five million people.
This autobiography began as a gift for his children and then opened to the public. He tells it in milestones, from a toll gate family in New Jersey to pulpits in Brooklyn and Washington. He died in 1902, and his wife, Eleanor McCutcheon Collier Talmage, adds the closing chapters. You get a preacher's life and a busy American age, with humor often at his own expense.

The youngest of twelve grows up in a hardworking home
Talmage opens with the family Bible, which records his birth on January 7, 1832. He was the youngest of twelve children, born in Middlebrook, New Jersey, where his father worked at a tollgate. Money was short.
His early years were a run of illnesses. Scarlet fever came so near to killing him that neighbors finished his burial clothes. He believed those epidemics left him with a lifetime of unusual health, and he thanked God for it.
He has no grand family tree to boast about. His father began with two hands and two feet as his only capital. Talmage calls this a gift, because it taught him that worth is not a matter of rank.
His mother worked until she was too tired to eat, and evenings brought neighbors, arguments and a shared reading of Scripture. Humble beginnings were an education in themselves.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
