Idea clave 1 de 9

A skeptic follows a rebbe's secret errand

The first tale, If Not Higher, asks where the Rebbe of Nemirov goes every Friday morning at the hour of the penitential prayers. His townspeople are sure he is in heaven, pleading for them before the Solemn Days.

That evening a doubting Lithuanian sneaks into the Rebbe's room and lies under the bed. He hears the Rebbe groan for all Israel, then watches him put on a peasant's boots and belt, take a hatchet and walk out of town toward a small wood.

Peretz puts a doubter on the trail of a man his neighbors deeply trust. The tale also sets the tone for the whole book, gentle humor with a quiet punch. Watch how stubborn curiosity keeps the Lithuanian following despite his fear.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Cuentos e imágenes

What is Stories and Pictures by Peretz about?

It is a collection of short tales and sketches of Jewish life in Poland, with poor porters, widows, scholars and rebbes. Some are realistic, some are fables, and all ask what faith, hunger and hope mean for ordinary people.

Who is the Rebbe of Nemirov in If Not Higher?

He is a rabbi who disappears each Friday before dawn. His followers say he goes to heaven. A Lithuanian skeptic follows him in secret to learn where he really goes.

Is the collection a true story?

The collection mixes stories, legends, fables and scenes of everyday Jewish life. In Travel Pictures, a narrator collects facts about Jewish towns and finds lives that numbers alone cannot describe.

What is the main message of the book?

Peretz suggests that goodness is often hidden in poor and silent people, and that pride and empty rule-keeping miss it. He also asks how a community can care for its weakest members, especially women, orphans and the hungry.

Is Stories and Pictures easy to read?

The pieces are short and self-contained, so you can read one at a time. Most have a clear scene, lively dialogue and a strong central figure, and the humor keeps them moving.
