Para quién es

For readers who enjoy fairy tales told simply, parents and teachers looking for tales to share aloud, and anyone curious about the roots of familiar fairy tales.

De qué trata este libro

Snowdrop and Other Tales gathers fairy tales from the collection made by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, two German scholars of language and folklore. They published their first volume of Children's and Household Tales in 1812 and kept revising it for decades. The title tale is the one many readers know as Snow White. It tells of a child, a jealous queen and a mirror that cannot lie.

The tales were not invented by the brothers. They wrote down stories told in German-speaking lands, shaped them with care and gave them the plain voice we still hear. In these pages you meet woods where children get lost, stepmothers who mean harm, poor youngest sons, clever animals and small people with strange powers. You get quick plots, sharp choices and a clear sense of right and wrong. Let us begin with the title tale, which opens on a snowy day and a wish.

A wish in the snow begins everything

The title tale opens in the middle of winter, while snowflakes fall like feathers from the sky. A queen sits sewing at a window with a frame of black ebony wood. She pricks her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fall onto the snow. The red looks so lovely against the white that she sighs and makes a wish.

She wishes for a child as white as snow, as red as blood and as black as the wood of the window frame. The wish is granted, and a daughter is born with skin, lips and hair of those three colors. The girl is called Snowdrop, and many readers know her as Snow White.

The joy does not last. The queen dies, and the child grows up without her mother. After a time the king marries again. His new wife is a beautiful woman, but she is proud and cannot bear the thought that anyone might be more beautiful than she is.

So the tale starts as many Grimm tales do, with a wish, a loss and a new danger in the house. Notice how little time the story spends on feelings and how much on action. The colors of the wish, white, red and black, return later and give the tale its pattern. A listener is already waiting to see what the wish will cost.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
