Para quién es

For readers who love knights and northern mountains, haunted castles and bargains with dark spirits, and stories where prayer, loyalty and a faithful old servant matter as much as swords.

De qué trata este libro

Sintram and His Companions begins with a boy crying at a feast. Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, the German author who died in 1843, wrote this northern romance of knights, ghosts and faith. Sintram is a pale, wild young knight in Norway, haunted by dreams and by a hideous dwarf called the little Master. Around him stand his fierce father Biorn, the faithful squire Rolf, the gentle Gabrielle and her knight Folko. The tale shows a soul at war with itself.

A boy screams in the great hall

The tale opens at Drontheim castle on a stormy night. Knights feast at a stone table when a boy rushes in with closed eyes, crying that Death and another are close behind him. He clings to his father, the mighty Biorn, and old Rolf the Good carries him away with a prayer.

Rolf tells the chaplain the cause. Seven years before, at a Yule feast, Biorn swore on a golden boar's head to kill any German trader in his power. Two shipwrecked merchants, a father and son, came begging shelter. Rolf alone dared refuse to join the killing.

Biorn's wife Verena cried to God, and the merchants walked free. Sintram has suffered ever since, and Verena prays for him in a convent.
