Para quién es

You will love this if you enjoy sharp, witty voices, big questions about faith and the self, and writers who unsettle comfortable habits of mind.

De qué trata este libro

What would you do if God asked you to give up the person you love most? Søren Kierkegaard, a Danish thinker writing in Copenhagen, explores that question in the Abraham pieces. This selection gathers several kinds of writing: the brooding sayings of a poet, a drunken banquet of talkers on love, the tale of Abraham on Mount Moriah, a call to follow Christ, and a fierce attack on a church that thinks it is Christian. You get the core of his thought in one pass.

Idea clave 1 de 9

A poet is a sufferer whose pain sounds sweet

The selection opens with short sayings from a speaker full of sorrow. He claims a poet is an unhappy person whose groans come out as lovely music. The crowd cries for more song, which really means more suffering, and the critics approve. He says a critic resembles a poet, but with no pain in the heart and no music on the lips.

He would rather be a swineherd on Amager, understood by pigs, than a poet misunderstood by people. He calls melancholy his most faithful sweetheart, and he laughs at busy men, who remind him of a woman carrying out the fire tongs while her house burns.

The point is a challenge to your own days. If life is only making a living, marrying money and taking communion once a year, what is all that rushing for? The speaker asks for one gift from the gods, to have the laugh on his side, and his laughter hides a hunger for something that actually matters.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Selecciones de los escritos de Kierkegaard

What is Selections from the Writings of Kierkegaard about?

It gathers excerpts from several of his works. They cover the poet's sorrow, a banquet of speeches on love, Abraham's trial in Fear and Trembling, the call of Christ in Practice in Christianity, and his attack on the Danish state church.

What is the leap of faith in Kierkegaard?

It is the movement beyond reason that he describes through Abraham. After giving up what he loves, the believer still trusts that God can give it back, by virtue of the absurd, while seeing clearly that human means cannot.

Who are the knights of resignation and faith?

The knight of infinite resignation gives up his deepest wish and finds peace. The knight of faith does the same, then trusts he will receive it back. Kierkegaard says the second looks like an ordinary, cheerful citizen.

Why did Kierkegaard write under different names?

He gave his ideas to invented voices such as Victor Eremita or Constantin Constantius, so readers meet each view in character. The banquet and the Abraham pieces show how this lets him test positions rather than simply announce them.

What is the main message of this book?

Faith and a true life are matters for each single person, taken at personal risk. Kierkegaard warns against hiding behind clever theories, crowds, history or a church that calls everyone Christian without cost.
