Para quién es

For readers who love the outdoors, practical skills, youth work or the history of the Edwardian age, and anyone who has ever worn a scout uniform.

De qué trata este libro

Scouting for Boys is a handbook for young people, written by Robert Baden-Powell, a British army officer. It first appeared in 1908, in six fortnightly parts, before it was gathered into a single book. Baden-Powell had become a national hero for his part in the defence of the town of Mafeking during the South African War. He noticed that boys back home were reading his old army training manual, Aids to Scouting, so he rewrote its lessons for them.

The book is built as a series of camp fire yarns, which are talks of the kind a leader might give around an evening fire. Each yarn mixes practical skills with stories, games and advice on how to live. You will meet tracking, camping, cooking, knots, first aid, healthy habits and the idea of a code of honour. Baden-Powell had tested many of these ideas at a small camp on Brownsea Island in 1907. He wanted boys to learn by doing, in small groups, outdoors.

The book gave a new movement its rules, its motto and its method, and it spread to dozens of countries. You can read it as a manual, as a piece of history, or as a window into how Edwardian Britain pictured a good citizen. Let us begin with the problem Baden-Powell thought he was solving.

A war hero turns to the boys

The story of the book starts in South Africa. In 1899 and 1900, Baden-Powell commanded the defence of Mafeking, a small town under siege by Boer forces. News of the long siege made him a hero in Britain. He had already written Aids to Scouting in 1899, a manual that taught soldiers to observe, to track and to use their wits.

When he returned home, he found that teachers and youth leaders were using that army book with boys. That surprised him, and it gave him an idea. If boys liked scouting skills, perhaps they could be shaped into a training for life. He began to think about how to teach young people self-reliance without the stiff drill of a school or the parade ground.

In August 1907 he tried the idea out at a camp on Brownsea Island, off the coast of Dorset. About twenty boys from different backgrounds took part. They lived in tents, cooked their own food, learned woodcraft and played games in patrols. Baden-Powell watched what held their interest and what bored them, and he adjusted his plans.

The book that followed was written with that experience behind it. It does not read like a lecture. It reads like a leader talking to boys who might wander off if he gets dull, so it is full of stories, jokes, sketches and challenges. He drew on tales of frontiersmen, explorers, soldiers and knights to keep his audience hooked.

His stated aim was larger than camping. He wanted to build good character and good citizens, boys who would be useful to others and ready for hard times. That purpose runs through every yarn. The skills are the bait, and the habits of honour and service are what he hopes the boy will keep.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
