Para quién es

For readers who love Austen's wit and enjoy social comedy, seaside settings and sharp observations of money, health and ambition—and anyone curious to see her try something fresh.

De qué trata este libro

Sanditon is the last novel Jane Austen began. She wrote it in 1817, in the final months of her life, while she was growing weaker with the illness that would kill her that July. She set it aside after about twelve chapters. It was published long after her death and has been read ever since as a glimpse of where her writing was heading.

The setting is new for her. Instead of a country village with its manor and parsonage, she gives us a small fishing place on the Sussex coast that a man named Tom Parker is trying to turn into a fashionable seaside resort. Her heroine, Charlotte Heywood, is a sensible young woman who watches a crowd of schemers, invalids and flirts with a cool and amused eye. You get sharp comedy about money, health and show, and a story only just beginning. Let us start where it starts, on a rough country lane in Sussex.

A broken carriage brings two worlds together

The story opens on the road between Tunbridge and the Sussex coast. A gentleman and his wife leave the high road to look for a surgeon and take a very rough lane. Their carriage overturns on the steep climb, and the gentleman wrenches his ankle badly. This is Tom Parker, and the lady is his wife Mary.

The accident happens beside a handsome house, and its owners come out to help. They are Mr and Mrs Heywood, a kind and settled country couple with a very large family. They take the Parkers in at once and look after the injured man. The stay lasts a fortnight, and it gives Austen a chance to show the quiet household where her heroine belongs.

Charlotte Heywood is the second of the Heywood daughters and is twenty-two. She is one of many children, so she is used to a full house and to keeping her head in a crowd. She is sensible, observant and good-humoured, and she does not pretend to feelings she does not have. Austen makes her the eyes of the story from the start.

The Parkers are very good guests in one way, for they are grateful and talkative, and a very poor one in another. Tom cannot stop talking about one subject. He has a place he loves more than anything, and he is soon telling the Heywoods all about it. Charlotte listens politely and begins to wonder whether his enthusiasm is wisdom or something nearer to a fever.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Sanditon

What is Sanditon about?

Sanditon follows Charlotte Heywood, who visits a small Sussex fishing village that a man named Tom Parker hopes to turn into a fashionable seaside resort. She meets its eccentric patrons, invalids and schemers.

Why is Sanditon unfinished?

Jane Austen began writing it in 1817 while seriously ill and stopped after about twelve chapters. She died that year, and the manuscript was left as a fragment.

Who is Lady Denham in Sanditon?

Lady Denham is a rich, elderly and thrifty widow who owns much of the land around Sanditon. She is Tom Parker's chief supporter and is flattered by relatives who hope to inherit from her.

Is Sanditon a real place?

No, Sanditon is invented. It is modelled on the new seaside resorts that were growing on the English coast in Austen's day, and is set on the Sussex coast.

Is Sanditon worth reading if it is unfinished?

Yes, for the comedy and the fresh setting. It is short, it has vivid characters like Sir Edward Denham and the Parker family, and it shows Austen trying something new.
