A river rescue brings a strange friend
Ruth Fielding offers to row her miserly uncle Jabez across the Lumano with four sacks of flour. He scoffs that it is no job for a girl, but he gives in.
Near the far shore his oar strikes a hidden reef. The boat smashes on a rock, and the old man cracks his head and falls into the water. Ruth holds his head above the surface and shouts for help.
A barefoot boy with gold rings in his ears dives in. He gives his name as Roberto, carries the miller to dry ground and refuses all thanks. Then he slips into the woods. That evening Jabez says girls are no use, and Ruth is hurt. She vows to earn her own way.
