A schoolboy engineer finds his calling

Owen Glynne Jones is born in Paddington in 1867, the son of a Welsh carpenter and builder. He wins prizes in science, takes a scholarship, and ranks above every other student of his year at the Central Institution.

The memoir is by W. M. Crook, who meets him at Wastdale Head at Easter 1890. They set out to climb Pillar Rock with an old guidebook. Crook has climbed with good Swiss guides, yet he has never seen anyone take to rock so easily. The slender young man balances on one foot in positions that seem almost impossible to Crook.

In 1891 Jones becomes physics master at the City of London School. He spends his holidays at Wastdale Head or Pen-y-gwrwd. He keeps small notebooks full of shorthand, dates and names, with occasional pen sketches of his routes. Those notebooks become the raw material of this guide.

Jones joins the mind of a trained scientist to the appetite of a born climber.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Escalada en roca en el Lake District inglés

What is Rock-Climbing in the English Lake District about?

It is a route-by-route guide to the crags, gullies and ridges of Cumberland, told as lively stories by pioneer Owen Glynne Jones. It also includes a memoir of his life and appendices that add later climbs.

Who was Owen Glynne Jones?

He was a London physics master, born in 1867, who became one of the finest rock climbers of his day. He made many first ascents in Wales and the Lake District and climbed widely in the Alps before his death in 1899.

What are the best-known climbs in the book?

The book covers Deep Ghyll, Moss Ghyll, Collier's Climb and Scawfell Pinnacle on Scawfell, the Gable Needle and Kern Knotts on Great Gable, and Pillar Rock with Walker's Gully.

Is it approachable for readers who do not climb?

Yes, and in fact the author wrote with walkers in mind. He tells each climb as a story with jokes, friends and weather, so you can follow the adventure without technical training.

Why did Jones write it?

He wanted to record the Lake District crags accurately, share his love of the sport and show that beginners can train on British rock before going to the Alps.
