De qué trata este libro

Roads of Destiny is a collection of short stories by O. Henry, the pen name of the American writer William Sydney Porter. It appeared in 1909, one year before his death in 1910. By then he had spent years writing weekly stories for New York newspapers and magazines, and readers knew his quick plots, his jokes and his sudden last turns.

The book gathers tales from many places. Some are set in the streets and rented rooms of New York. Others take place on the Texas plains, in small Southern towns, or in the hot ports of Central America. The title story sends a young French poet down three roads from one fork, and it asks whether a person can ever choose a different life. Another tale, A Retrieved Reformation, follows a safecracker who tries to start again. In this summary you will meet the main stories, learn how O. Henry builds them, and see what ties them together. Let us begin with the story that gives the book its name.

Idea clave 1 de 6

A shepherd poet stands at a fork

The title story opens in France with a young man named David Mignot. He lives in a small village and keeps sheep, but he writes poems and dreams of a larger life. He is restless, and he feels that the village is too small for the words he carries in his head.

At the edge of the village he comes to a place where the road divides. Here the story does something unusual. The tale is set up so that more than one choice can be followed.

O. Henry then lets the reader walk with David down each of the roads in turn. One way leads toward the city and its glitter. Another leads toward a different kind of life. A third leads back toward home. Each path brings new people, new hopes and new dangers.

The pleasure of the story lies in comparison. You watch how small choices shape a life, and you keep asking whether the choices matter as much as David thinks they do. The story is short, but it sets up the question that runs through the whole book.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
