Para quién es

Readers who love warm family stories, lively sisters and brothers, schoolgirl friendships, English country houses and gentle old-fashioned humour, and anyone who enjoys watching a good heart learn to face the truth.

De qué trata este libro

Red Rose and Tiger Lily is a novel by L. T. Meade, who wrote many stories for girls in the late nineteenth century. It follows on from her earlier school story A World of Girls and returns to some of its people. Annie Forest, now head girl at Lavender House school, spends a summer holiday at the Grange, the home of her friend Hester Thornton.

The book gives you two country families and a summer full of small choices that grow large. The Thorntons are rich, formal and cool. The Lorrimers of the Towers are poor, warm and noisy, with ten children and a houseful of pets. Between them move an impulsive girl, a promise she breaks, a ring that is not hers, and a strange visitor in a shabby black dress.

You will meet Annie, who means well and acts too fast. You will meet Nan, who cannot be seen and not heard, and Nell, the child who loves ponies and storybooks. Then there is Antonia, who worships art and has a will of iron. The story starts on a bright summer evening with a carriage coming up a drive, and it begins with Nan's golden hair and a worry about a stepmother.

Two sisters come home to the Grange

The story opens at the Grange on a perfect summer evening. Hester Thornton, seventeen and steady, waits on the drive for her little sister Nan, who is coming home from school. Their father, Sir John, is a cold and exact man who likes order and quiet. He tells Hester he dreads Nan's arrival, because Nan loves surprises and noise, and he prefers the calm daughter who runs his house.

Nan arrives with a surprise of her own. Annie Forest, Hester's close friend from school, has come a day early. The three girls walk up to the house, and Hester is happier than she has been for a year. Annie is lovely to look at and full of life, and Nan has soft dark eyes and golden hair that falls below her waist.

Upstairs, Nan sits on her old nurse's knee. The nurse, Mrs. Martin, lets slip that she once feared Sir John might bring home a new wife. Nan hates the idea at once. A stepmother would be a horror, and the thought clouds her happy return.

At supper Nan tells her father she is glad he looks so old, because an old man will not marry. Sir John is angry, and orders her to remember that little girls should be seen and not heard. That evening Annie speaks frankly to him about how he treats Nan, and he leaves the room, leaving her feeling crushed.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
