De qué trata este libro
Red Eve is a medieval adventure by H. Rider Haggard, the English storyteller best known for his tales of hidden African kingdoms. He dedicated it in 1911 to a colleague on a royal commission that studied how the sea eats away the English coast. The drowned port of Dunwich in Suffolk, slowly swallowed by the waves, sits at the heart of its setting. The book mixes real history with a legend of Death as a traveler.
The story begins in February 1346. Hugh de Cressi, a merchant's youngest son, loves his cousin Eve Clavering, a dark-haired heiress who always wears red. Their families are bitter enemies, and her father has promised her to Sir Edmund Acour, a charming French count who is secretly spying for France. Hugh and Eve run, and the chase carries them from the Suffolk marshes to a royal court, the battlefield of Crecy, Venice and Avignon.
Beside Hugh rides Grey Dick, an archer whose black bow never seems to miss. Ahead of them, and sometimes among them, walks Murgh, a strange figure from the East who is called the Gateway of the Gods and who carries the great plague westward. You get duels, daring escapes and a love story that is tested again and again, all against the first spread of the Black Death. Let us begin on the frozen marsh where it all starts.

Two cousins meet on frozen ground
The book opens far away in the East. A man in a red cloak, led by a dancing woman, boards a ship with crimson sails as a plague lifts from a great city. A voice from the dark tells the crowd that this man, Murgh, serves a Master, and that life and death are not in human hands. Then the story turns to England.
On a bitter February evening in 1346, Hugh de Cressi meets his cousin Eve Clavering in the Blythburgh marshes near Dunwich. It is his twenty-third birthday. Eve wears red, as she always does, and the whole county calls her Red Eve. The two families share a great-grandmother, but the Claverings hold the land while the de Cressis have grown rich on wool, fishing fleets and ferry tolls.
Years of quarrels over money and a seized ferry have made the families open enemies. That is why the cousins meet in secret, among frozen reeds, like a village girl and her sweetheart. Eve has come to say farewell. Her father has promised her to Sir Edmund Acour, who is also Count of Noyon in France and Seigneur of Cattrina near Venice, and he is feasting at the manor with five knights and ten squires.
Eve loathes him, and Hugh has heard that Acour is a traitor who came to spy on England. She reminds Hugh that he is only a merchant's younger son, and that her father, her brother and a troop of Frenchmen stand in his way. Yet she knows a way out. She was born in Dunwich, and the old charter of that town says no citizen can be forced into marriage.
Hugh asks her how much she loves him, and her answer is a kiss. They agree to flee to Sir Andrew Arnold, the old priest who is Hugh's godfather and Eve's teacher, and to sail for Flanders. Before they can move, Hugh's servant Grey Dick calls like a peewit. Dick is a gaunt archer with ash-grey hair and pale eyes, and he warns that Eve's father, her brother John, Acour and many armed men are sweeping the marsh. He hides the pair in a hollow inside an old mound, and they wait as hoofbeats draw close.
