A fishing day shows who Randy is

The story begins in the town of Riverport. Randy Thompson is the only son of a carpenter, a good student and one of the best fishermen around. His friend Jack Bartlett asks his secret, and Randy says patience. Other boys moved upriver when the fish did not bite, and they caught half as many as he did.

The same quality carries Randy through the book. He sticks with a job and gives it a fair try. He is also kind. He carries water and wood for his mother, and in the evening he brings two fish to a poor washerwoman.

Then comes Bob Bangs, the town bully and the son of the richest man in the district. He sneers at Randy as a poor carpenter's son. Later the boys leave twenty fish in a pool while they pick blackberries. When they return, three of the biggest fish are gone from each string, and a key ring marked R. A. B. lies beside the pool.

They catch Bob at his father's garden gate. Jack holds up the key ring, and Bob can no longer deny it. Randy takes back the best fish and says he would not do anything so dirty for a thousand dollars. Randy will not be pushed around, and he never lies to escape trouble. Bob lies easily and blames someone else.

Patience and a clear conscience outlast a bully's bluster.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
