The plot in six lines

Sheltering from rain in Covent Garden, Eliza Doolittle hears Henry Higgins boast to Colonel Pickering that he can change her speech and pass her off as a duchess.

Eliza visits Higgins to buy lessons for work in a flower shop, and Pickering offers to pay for the experiment if Higgins succeeds.

Alfred Doolittle arrives seeking money from his daughter's new situation, and Higgins pays him while treating his claim over Eliza as a matter of convenience.

Higgins trains Eliza harshly while Pickering treats her courteously, and her improving speech opens possibilities without settling what she will do after the lessons.

At Mrs Higgins's home, Eliza's polished accent contrasts with her unexpected conversation, prompting Mrs Higgins to question the men's plans for her future.

Eliza passes the embassy test but feels hurt by Higgins's cold pride, leaves his house, and finally confronts him as an equal before departing on her own terms, while Shaw's later note says she marries Freddy.

Themes

Class and speech: Eliza's changing reception shows how accent and manners govern social acceptance without proving anything about a person's worth.

Respect: Pickering's courtesy contrasts with Higgins's careless cruelty, showing that technical instruction and humane treatment are not the same achievement.

Independence: Eliza's growing confidence challenges Higgins's assumption that shaping her speech gives him authority over her life.

Money and morality: Alfred Doolittle's bargain exposes how money shapes respectable behavior and how easily people treat another person as property.

Creation and control: Shaw questions the myth behind the title by giving the supposedly created woman a will her teacher cannot control.
