The plot in six lines

David Wilson arrives in Dawson's Landing, where a misunderstood joke earns him a foolish reputation, while his collection of fingerprints attracts the town's scorn.

Fearing that her son might be sold down the river, Roxy exchanges his clothes and cradle with those of Percy Driscoll's baby.

Roxy's son grows up as the privileged Tom, while the true heir becomes Chambers, an enslaved servant, and Judge York Driscoll later takes Tom in.

Tom accumulates gambling debts and steals from neighbors, Roxy returns after losing her savings, and the visiting Italian twins become caught in local quarrels.

During a murder trial, Wilson uses his fingerprint collection to prove who committed the crime and reveal the two boys' true identities.

Tom is sold into slavery down the river, Chambers is released from slavery but cannot fit into the white world, and the town finally admires Wilson.

Themes

Race and law: Roxy's exchange of the babies exposes how law and custom assign racial identities that determine lives.

Upbringing: Tom's cruelty and Chambers's kindness challenge inherited status by showing how different treatment shapes the two boys.

Labels and evidence: The town dismisses Wilson through a nickname, while his fingerprints eventually overturn its confident judgments about identity.

Slavery: Roxy's fear of separation and Tom's final fate show how slavery turns people into property.

Honor and pride: Judge York Driscoll's devotion to ancestry exposes the gap between the town's honorable reputation and its acceptance of cruelty.
