A letter and a ghost at midnight

The story opens with a test. A writer in California receives a letter from Carson Napier in Mexico, and the letter asks whether a shrouded woman will visit his bedroom on the thirteenth.

The writer forgets it, and then the woman passes through his closed door and speaks. He answers the letter, and a visitor who looks like Napier arrives. He explains that he was raised in India by a mystic named Chand Kabi, who taught him to send thoughts and images across great distances. Both the ghost and this first visiting Napier are images. The real Napier arrives after his image disappears.

Napier is a rich young stuntman and flyer who has built a huge rocket on Guadalupe Island. He wants the writer to record the messages he will send by thought from Mars. That is why the whole tale reads as a report from a faraway friend.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
