A drop in the bucket
A drop in the bucket means an amount so small that it makes little difference to a larger need or total. The image appears in Isaiah 40:15 in the King James Bible, where nations are compared with something tiny beside God's greatness.
Where it comes from
The biblical image
The modern phrase echoes Isaiah 40:15. In the King James Bible, the nations are compared to a drop of a bucket, emphasizing their smallness beside God's greatness.
In Isaiah 40 of The Bible, the prophet describes God's power over creation, asking who has measured the waters or weighed the mountains. He then compares the nations to a drop from a bucket and dust on a balance.

A small amount beside a large need
Today the phrase often describes money, supplies, or effort that cannot meet a much larger need. It need not mean that the contribution is completely worthless.
In Oliver Twist, the workhouse boys receive such small meals that they remain desperately hungry, and Oliver asks for more. Their scant portions illustrate the kind of mismatch between provision and need that the phrase can describe.

How to use A drop in the bucket
- Name the small amount or contribution.
- Explain the larger need or total beside it.
- Avoid dismissing a useful contribution merely because it is small.
Does a drop in the bucket mean something is useless?
No, it means something is very small compared with the need or total, not necessarily useless. A donation may help a few people while barely changing the overall problem. The phrase stresses scale, though it can sound dismissive if used without care.
Is a drop in the ocean the same thing?
Yes, a drop in the ocean usually means the same thing: a tiny amount beside something much larger. Both expressions work for money, effort, or quantities. The bucket wording has a familiar biblical source in Isaiah 40:15 in The Bible.
