Who Madame Giry is

Madame Giry is a stern box keeper in a worn shawl who looks after the seat claimed by the Opera Ghost. She tells the managers that he sometimes leaves her a small coin and sweets. In her account, the ghost behaves politely when his wishes are obeyed.

Madame Giry and the others in the story

Her dealings with the ghost contrast with the disbelief of Firmin Richard and Armand Moncharmin, the Opera's new managers. They see his demands as a joke, while she treats him with plain respect. Box Five must remain empty for him, making her work part of his hold over the theater.

How Madame Giry changes

The managers come to suspect that Madame Giry is responsible for the pranks troubling the Opera. They dismiss her, but the ghost's letters continue and their explanation begins to fail. Her removal exposes the gap between what the managers believe and what they can actually control.
