You will love this book if you enjoy castles with secrets, shipwreck and survival, old-fashioned romance, gentle heroines who act with courage, and friendship between women.

De qué trata este libro

Picture a beach strewn with wreckage and bodies. It is September 1607, and a gale has smashed two ships against the rocks. The Queen Elizabeth, bound for the colony of Virginia, splits open on a cliff. High among the stones lies a young woman in deep mourning, cut, cold and soaked through. She does not want to be rescued.

Peak's Island: A Romance of Buccaneer Days is a novel by Anna W. Ford Piper. It follows Anna Vyvyan, an English heiress sailing for Virginia. You get a stone castle crammed with pirate treasure, a fierce woman who guards a mound with a rusty sword, a golden-haired child who speaks in her own baby words, and a friendship that keeps three people alive far from home.

A happy girl at the manor loses everyone

Anna Vyvyan grows up in an old manor house on the border of Wales. Her father, an officer in Queen Elizabeth's navy, dies in royal service when she is very small. Her mother, a rich and gifted widow, turns away every suitor and gives her life to her daughter. Music is Anna's passion. She plays the church organ and the harpsichord, and outdoors she wonders what key the wind and the brook sing in.

When her cousin Cecil Vyvyan arrives from India, he is a thin, pale boy with a Scottish tutor named Dr. Strickland. Anna is strong and fearless. Cecil is gentle and dislikes cruel sport. Dr. Strickland gives the boy six reasons why love for others calls for courage. Cecil learns that courage can be quiet, and he leans on his cousin's strength. He paints, she sings, and they meet daily beside a small fountain. By twenty, the two are deeply in love.

Then the losses begin. Anna's mother takes her to London to be presented at court. Her mother's cough sends them to Italy and then to Norway, where she dies. A letter from Dr. Strickland tells how Cecil faded and died. Anna can say only three words: O God, alone.

Her guardian, the elderly judge Sir Thomas Richardson, takes her in. After three years of chess and silence he sends her to kin in Virginia aboard the Queen Elizabeth. Anna starts the story with a heart already broken, and that is what makes her next choice matter.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about La isla de Peak: una novela de los días de los bucaneros

What is Peak's Island about?

It follows Anna Vyvyan, an English heiress shipwrecked in 1607 on a forested island. She saves Mrs. Ada Carleton and her small daughter Cora, and the three make a home in an old castle full of buccaneer treasure.

Who is Louisita in Peak's Island?

Louisita is a Spanish woman who lives alone in a mound on the island. Once a lady's maid to Donna Inez, she tells the shipwrecked women the castle's history and blames men for her sorrows.

Is Peak's Island a true story?

It is a romance, a work of fiction, though it uses real settings such as 1607, the colony of Virginia and the age of buccaneers. It mentions figures like Orlando Gibbons and Captain John Smith only in passing.

What does Anna be back mean in the book?

It is Cora's own baby way of saying come back. The women never correct it, and it grows into a sign of the love that ties the three of them together.

Is Peak's Island easy to read?

It has short scenes, clear dialogue and a warm narrator. Each chapter opens with a few lines of verse, and the adventure keeps moving through the castle, the beach and the forest.
