Para quién es

You will enjoy this book if you like short stories with warm humor, vivid Western scenery, and ordinary people who surprise themselves. It suits readers curious about Colorado in the 1890s.

De qué trata este libro

What would you do if you saw a frightened dog dragged to City Hall at the end of a pole, and you had only a few dollars to your name? That small choice opens Peak and Prairie, a set of sketches by Anna Fuller, gathered in 1894. Several tales first appeared in American magazines, but she planned them as one connected series.

The setting is Springtown, a Colorado health resort under a great snowy mountain called the Peak. Prairie ranches lie to the east and the rough mining camp of Lame Gulch to the west. Fuller fills this ground with invalids, cowboys, miners, gamblers, a young Irish baronet and a girl who owns a mountainside. The thirteen chapters move from comedy to danger to quiet sorrow, and together they make one picture of a place and a moment.

A widow ransoms a dog and finds a home

Mrs. Nancy Tarbell is a small widow in an old-fashioned black dress. She came to Springtown for her sick son Willie, who died soon after they arrived. Now she dreams of going home to New England.

Her money is tied up in railroad certificates that pay nothing, so she worries about spending two dollars on a dog. One morning she sees a rough man dragging a white collie to City Hall because the dog has no license. She pays out of pity. She names him David, because he has been delivered from the Philistines. The next morning he is gone.

The next afternoon a rancher called Wat Warren rides up with David, to thank her. He takes her to his dairy ranch, then tells her what her house and lot would fetch. Suddenly her old wish looks within reach, and a letter from her sister-in-law Almira makes her weigh it.

Kindness done on impulse can open a door you did not know was there.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Pico y Pradera: De un Bosquejo de Colorado

What is Peak and Prairie about?

It is a collection of linked sketches about Springtown, a Colorado health resort, and the ranches and mining camp around it. The stories follow widows, ranchers, gamblers, teachers, and young lovers in the early 1890s.

Who wrote Peak and Prairie and when?

The book is by Anna Fuller, with a preface dated May 1894. Six sketches first ran in American magazines before she gathered them into one book.

Are the stories connected?

Yes. They share the same setting, with Springtown, Lame Gulch, and the Peak. Some characters, such as Dick Dayton, appear in more than one chapter, so the collection reads like one portrait of a place.

Is Springtown a real place?

Springtown is a fictional name for a real kind of Colorado health resort at the foot of a great mountain. Fuller describes real conditions, like the mining boom and ranch life, through invented characters.

Is Peak and Prairie easy to read?

Yes, it is approachable. Each chapter is a self-contained story with lively dialogue, humor, and clear scenes, so you can read one at a time and still follow the whole.
