De qué trata este libro
Pathfinder, or The Missing Tenderfoot is a boy scout adventure by Captain Alan Douglas, one of the Hickory Ridge Boy Scout books. It follows a troop of boys on an outing in the last weeks of summer vacation. The outing starts as a game of fox and hounds and turns into a real search.
The book gives you a lively lesson in woodcraft along the way. You learn how Indian picture writing carries a message, how footprints tell who passed and how fast, and how a small object left behind can explain a whole camp. The guide is Elmer Chenowith, the patrol leader and acting scoutmaster, who reads signs as easily as a page of print. Let us begin with the first message the scouts find on the trail, a piece of birch bark in a split stick.

A message on birch bark
Seven scouts of the Hickory Ridge troop stop in the big woods. A stick stands upright in the trail, and a piece of fresh birch bark is wedged in its split end. It is a message from Elmer Chenowith, the pathfinder of a game of fox and hounds.
The game is simple. A few scouts have gone ahead to carry a wampum belt, and Elmer follows their trail. He leaves signs for two groups of followers behind him. The group at the head is led by Matty Eggleston, who leads the Beaver Patrol and is working toward First Class rank.
The bark carries Indian picture writing, signed with the paw of a wolf, the totem of Elmer's patrol. Matty reads it aloud for the new boys, Landy Smith and George Robbins. Three figures stand for three enemies, and small marks under them name their patrols. One has no hat, and the boys guess he is Nat Scott, who is always losing his. One has a bent leg, so he is Ty Collins. One seems to have wings, and that is Toby Jones, who dreams of flying.
The message goes on. The trail forks, and a wavy line around one figure's waist marks the carrier of the wampum belt. A small hidden cooking fire is not the same as a roaring campfire, Matty explains, and four raised hands tell the troop that Elmer is only twenty minutes behind. Landy, who once thought it was all a baby game, begins to see how much a scout can learn.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about El rastreador; o, El novato perdido
What is Pathfinder or The Missing Tenderfoot about?
Boy scouts of the Hickory Ridge troop play a tracking game that leads to Munsey's old mill. There one of them, Nat Scott, vanishes, and Elmer Chenowith uses tracking skills to follow the clues and find him.
Who is Elmer Chenowith?
Elmer is the Wolf Patrol leader and acting scoutmaster while the scoutmaster is away. He grew up in Canada and learned to read tracks and signs, and the other scouts look to him to solve problems.
What is Indian picture writing in the book?
It is a simple system of drawn signs used to leave messages on birch bark. Totems such as a wolf paw name patrols, and small marks such as a bent leg or missing hat identify scouts.
Is Munsey's mill really haunted?
People in Hickory Ridge say it is, because three families left it. Chatz Maxfield half believes the story and George laughs at it. The scouts look for real clues and find ordinary causes for many strange sounds and sights.
Is Pathfinder easy to read?
It is told in short chapters with plenty of dialogue, quick scenes and friendly humor. Each clue is explained plainly, so you can follow the reasoning and learn tracking tips as you read.
